About the band…

Hey everyone! I just realized I didn’t tell you anything about the band that I just joined in January. Let me tell you how that came about and what is happening!

When I was still doing open mic at the Italian Club, I really liked to cover 80s songs. One of the other open mic peeps, Dave Manley, mentioned that he really liked the 80s too and started to cover them as well when he performed. This 80s love evolved into band formation that Dave Manley, Joe Barker, and Adam Nudo thought would be fun. All of these guys are solo musicians and do some original songwriting. The Street Light Curfew Band was born….

When I saw them post about where they would be playing next, I was so excited to go to watch them perform the tunes of my teen years. I sang every song with them from the audience. Harmonized from my table and dreamed of being in that band. When the guys would take a break from their set, I would go up to them and let them know how much I enjoyed the music they were bringing and that they really “needed a keyboard player” in the group. They just laughed and said “we’re good”.

Every once in awhile, Dave Manley would ask me to join him at open mic for an 80s tune that he knew would be a good duet for us…impromptu, of course, and I loved it. We weren’t perfect but it was the 80s…what’s not to love, right?!?

I continued to follow this group and perform at open mics, singing those 80s songs that I love and still dreaming of being in the band. I remember playing at the Laveen Folk Festival this past November… my set was about to start and along come all three of the guys from Street Light Curfew to listen. It had just started to rain but the guys were still there, and looking like they were really loving what I was singing (and it wasn’t even the 80s). I knew thier set was right after mine at another location and they still took the time to come to watch my set for awhile. This meant so much to me.

Later, in early December, the band was going to be at the AZ BBQ Shack and asked a couple of fellow musicians to come jam with them. They gave me a couple songs that they would like me to play with them for fun. Of course, I said please and thank you! It was a great time, a thrilling time, and a scary time as there was no set list given to me ahead of time. Little did I know but I was, in a way, auditioning for The Street Light Curfew Band.

Later that month, I went to see my sister in KCMO. Dave Manley called me and asked if I have time to chat…my heart raced and I said “Sure!”. I was wondering to myself….is this the call….do I get to play with them again….

Sure enough, Dave said that the band wanted to continue this “little experiment” with me and wanted to know if I wanted to start practicing with them every Wednesday. Well, of course, I said YES! Do bees like flowers? I started to practice with them and it wasn’t long before I was just IN THE BAND.

Since then, we have performed at the Glendale Folk & Heritage Festival and have a very busy April schedule. I am thrilled to be a part of this band. I always knew I wanted to be a part of a band but also knew it couldn’t be just ANY band. When this offer came up, I jumped on it. I love the music, I know the music, and I feel the music. Look for more updates coming about where and when we will be performing. I just wanted to make sure you had THE REST OF THE STORY…

Until the next update…rock on and love each other well.
